Quote of the week

"He always did what he wanted to do. And he wanted to do it his way and he wanted to do it the best way. His death was no different from his life – a work of art.”

- Tony Visconti, the producer of a series of David Bowie’s albums, wrote a beautiful Facebook tribute to the star earlier this week.

In today's connected world, personal brand management has become big business. But while social media has made it easier to raise profiles, you have to turn up the volume for your brand to be heard amid the noise. This article in the FT looks into the new industry of personal branding consultants, and presents some of their advice on how to market yourself.

Managing yourself = Personal brands turn up the volume

The rise of freelancing makes it more important to market yourself amid social media clamour,

In the shifting world of work, where freelancers and contractors must pitch their qualities and competitive edge to employers, personal marketing is of increasing importance. This was first articulated by management guru Tom Peters in an article he wrote in 1997. “We are CEOs of our own companies: Me Inc. To be in business today, our most important job is to be head marketer for the brand called You.”

Song of the week

To mark the passing of two of Britain’s most prolific creative talents, both aged 69, this week, we have chosen Bryan Adam’s “Summer of ‘69”. Even in their departure of this world, they will continue to bring sunshine to many people’s lives.

Discovery of the week

The Afghan Kitchen on Angel’s Upper Street is tiny and somewhere you might easily miss. But the tables are full, the wine is flowing and the food is truly memorable. We had a few dishes to share, including the aubergine with yoghurt, moong daal accompanied with a pretzel-style delicious bread, chutney and pickles. The atmosphere is lively and if you’re looking to try a new type of cuisine – in our experience Afghan restaurants in London are few and far between – this is worth a visit.

Marking POTUS’ final State of the Union speech, our social media pick of the week is The White House’s Instagram feed. Packed with photos taken by the White House’s Chief Photographer, it provides an insight into the goings on inside the iconic building.

Last night saw the launch of London’s Lumiere festival marking the 350th anniversary of the Great Fire of London. The festival will see art installations based upon light popping up across the capital over the next 3 days. One of the Sermelo team members managed to take a snap of an installation hung in the middle of Oxford Circus.
